What Skin Type Do I Have?
For a skincare regime to be effective it is crucial to be familiar with your skin type. Today, we're taking a closer look at the different types of skin and tips on how to distinguish which skin type you have.
Knowing what type of skin you have is fundamental in selecting the cosmetic products that target your individual skin concerns. The skin is generally divided into four main categories:
Normal skin
Most people yearn to have normal skin and yet having normal skin is particularly rare. Normal skin types have a soft and smooth feel, plump appearance and is unsusceptible to external aggressors. The moisture level is intact and sebum production balanced resulting in an oil-free canvas with fine pores that is without any spots, flaky areas or impurities.
- Skincare tip: Normal skin is best cared for using gentle cosmetics that protect the skin to preserve its natural beauty.
Oily skin
Oily skin is categorised by excessive sebum production. The skin produces sebum to moisturise itself and preserve suppleness. However, when sebum production is in overdrive it clogs the pores, leading to blackheads and, in some cases, inflammation that can spread as far as the decollete and the back. Especially during the teenage years when hormones are being produced at super speed, the skin tends to suffer from oiliness and breakouts. Oily skin types tend to have enlarged pores and an oily appearance.
Skincare tip: Cosmetics with astringent, mattifying and protective properties that have a light-weight feel are the best solution for oily skin types.
Dry skin
The thin, near to transparent appearance of dry skin has a tendency to be on the flaky side and has the inclination to be itchy and very sensitive. Due to the lack of lipids, it also has an unpleasant feeling of tightness. Dry skin has an oil and lipid deficiency which in turn impairs the skin's protective barrier, the acid mantle, which causes even more dryness. This skin type suffers from fewer spots and skin impurities during its youth. However, dry skin is more susceptible to wrinkles earlier on than the other skin types. It is, therefore, crucial to use a sunscreen with a high SPF to prevent premature skin aging. During winter, it is advised to use cold cream.
- Skincare tip: Dry skin requires rich creams, anti-aging products and protective formulas.
Combination skin
Combination skin is a mix of dry and oily skin types. The T-zone area typically has enlarged pores, has a greasy appearance and is prone to impurities. The cheeks are generally on the sensitive side.
- Skincare tip: It is recommended to use very gentle creams that deliver sufficient moisture without burdening the T-zone area.
